LEGAL REQUIREMENTS
In Grenada, there is no legal requirements to be a chaplain. However because my training was of an international standard, based on North American best pratice, I reccomend the minimal qualification of a Master of Divinity or its equivalent. Graduates holding a Diploma in Ministerial Studies from the United Theolgical College of the West Indies and a Bachelor of Theology or Ministerial Studies degree from the University of the West Indies-Mona, meet this requirement.
EXPLANATION
Pastoral Care consists of helping acts done by representative Christian persons [or faith-based individuals], directed towards the healing, guiding, and reconciling of troubled persons, whose troubles arise in the context of ultimate meaning and concerns (Clesbsch and Jackle 1967, p.4). Chaplaincy is any pastoral care or counseling initiative that a trained minister does outside of the immediate church or religious space. Therefore a pastoral caregiver is a chaplain when he or she gives organized care at hospitals, correctional centers, businesses, and institutions.
Many corporate entities in North America (the United States and Canada) and Europe (England) agree that in times of personal or national crises pastoral care services are necessary. While this is so, this is true for the Caribbean also.
As a minister who believes in a culture of excellence, I strive to become one of the first in Grenada to offer this type of pastoral care service; namely corporate chaplaincy.
